Bitterroot Beagle Productions is producing a documentary film on the Bitterroot Elk Study. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is conducting this study to determine the cause of the dramatic decline in elk populations in the Bitterroot Valley. The cause of declining elk populations elsewhere, including Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Idaho, could also be addressed in this study. Elk are one of Montana's great natural treasures. Since 2004 however, the elk population in the Bitterroot Valley has been in decline. The latest surveys show cow:calf ratios as low as 11 calves per 100 cows, which is insufficient to sustain the herd. If this trend continues, biologists fear elk could eventually disappear from the Bitterroots. We decided on this project because we feel this study will prove to be a vital tool in future elk management. Please watch the video clip below.
